Turkey Shoot '96
Sepulveda Dam

This was our first Indian Guide event, and it was a real learning experience for me. The morning of the event, we hiked into some woods and found a nice branch from which to make our Indian bow. It looked gnarly and natural. I used some fishing line for the string.

When we arrived at the Turkey Shoot event, I saw people with laminated bamboo bows, Lucite bows, and a hand lacqured bows with feathers, felt, etc. that looked like it took a year of Sundays to build. Well, ours was still cool looking...

Then came the distance contest. The top placer was over 100 yards as I recall. Our bow was so stiff that Tyler could hardly get a 3 or 4 yards out of it and then the string broke. He was humilitated.

After that, the kids got to shoot real nice bows. I had taken archery in college, so I had an advantage on teaching Tyler proper form.

Shooting the bow

Let's see if it really shoots.

Shooting a real bow

Well, this one works.
